Petra – Jordan’s New Wonder of the World: A Testament to Ingenuity In The Face of a Harsh and Potentially Unhealthy Environment

Petra is a truly amazing place in southern Jordan. It is a historical and archaeological city. It is known for its carvings in rock and for its water conduit system. It is definitely a must see.

When one enters Petra, they do so by way of the Siq. This is a narrow passage formed by cliffs separating over time. The two sides of the path fit together like puzzle pieces. A dam is seen at the beginning of the route and ends at the Treasury, a site famously seen in Indian Jones.

On both sides of the Siq there are pipes or channels that draw water from Wadi Musa outside the city. On the left side there is carved out channel to funnel water, with filters in place along the way. It is truly amazing to see first hand how people from 300 BC addressed the health impacts of the environment. They developed ways to obtain water, hold it, and clean it. Wow!
